Nepal Earthquake Crisis: Caring for the Caregivers
From the first news report of Nepal's 7.8 earthquake, Alberta and I knew that Team's workers in Nepal would be needing trauma debriefing 'down the road'. The next day we received an email from Team's director of counseling confirming our thoughts and asking us to put together an ad hoc group which would research resources and facilitate a pastoral care team visit to Kathmandu.
The added challenge: Team partners with another organization in their work in Nepal so we would be searching for the right debrief specialists to work with personnel from both organizations. Our ad hoc group located a couple that was experienced in crisis debriefs, having previously facilitated the debriefs of Christian workers evacuated from a nation in political crisis - a "different kind of shaking".
Member care best practices suggests pastoral care is needed about 1-2 months after the initial shock of the crisis. The couple located landed in Nepal on June 8 -six weeks after the initial quake. Thanks for your prayers as this husband and wife team was identified and sent out. We received positive feedback that both the individual debriefs and the full day debrief of the whole group was very helpful.

Team is making a great impact as they come alongside Nepalis in their time of need. This photo shows a temporary shelter constructed out of corrugated sheet metal for just $100. One of Team's workers facilitated the construction of over 100 of these shelters in the village she was moving into at the time of the earthquake. She used funds donated to Team as a response to the crisis. Pray for long term renovation of both physical property and Nepali hearts through God's love being poured out in Word and deed.
Prayer Requests:
Prayer Requests:
1. Pray for us as we consider a local request to do member care training for people from a nearby country who are learning to be mis. We would be working through interpreters if this goes ahead.
2. Pray as we continue to plan our travel schedule that we could connect the dots smoothly to the locations we need to travel.
Serving Christ with You, Steve and Alberta
