Fear Itself
| moving day |
It seems our nation is in the grip of a fear of the unknown: fear of new and different people fleeing war zones and seeking stability and peace. FDR, in his first Inaugural speech coined these famous words, "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself." We have met many wonderful people (not people to be feared but fearfully (and wonderfully) made people 😏). We met them through our volunteering in an ESL program (teaching English as a second language). We have been learning a lot from them.
We had the opportunity to help an immigrant family move from a tiny 2 bedroom apt to a 4 bedroom house. They should be 8 total, but Jeff and Kaja took in two members of Jeff's brother's family when they left the refugee camp in Zambia a year ago. So, they are now a family of 10. They had been living in the refugee camp there for 23 years! Jeff and his family are grateful for all the people that made this move possible.
One Sunday afternoon during our English class the facilitator was working on adjectives, good and bad. Jeff was asked to give an example of a bad day. "There are no bad days", he said. He quoted the book of Genesis where it states that each day God made was good - so, there are no bad days", he repeated. Excellent point! I am glad Jeff and Kaja and their family have come to our country with their family. We will be enriched by their faith and maturity that has come through a kind of suffering that we only read about in the news. Let's pray for Jeff and Kaja as they come up to speed in language and culture in our fast paced society.

Prayer Requests:
1. Pray for Heather as she works on her Canadian citizenship. This may be of help to her if she decides to stay in the UK to work for a while after she finishes studying.
2. Pray for Alberta as she works ahead on her studies to offset time she will be away for the Global Health Conf. in Louisville, Kentucky Nov. 9-11.
3. Pray for me, Steve, as I travel to the Washington DC area to attend a memorial service for a family friend this weekend.
Serving Christ with You, Steve and Alberta
